E-Bike Safety

Electric bikes (E-bikes), scooters, mopeds, and dirt bikes are becoming increasingly popular among students in our community. While these forms of transportation offer convenience and independence, they also come with serious responsibilities. It is important for families to understand and discuss the rules of the road and the laws that apply to these vehicles.
Just like cars, all motorized bikes and scooters must follow traffic laws. This includes obeying stop signs and traffic signals, yielding to pedestrians, and riding in the appropriate lanes or bike paths. In many cases, riders are also required to wear helmets, regardless of their age. Understanding how to safely operate these vehicles is essential for preventing accidents and avoiding legal consequences.
To help clarify the rules and expectations, the Livermore Police Department has provided information that breaks down the different classifications of e-bikes, scooters, mopeds, and dirt bikes. It also outlines the legal requirements—such as registration, licensing, and helmet use—and explains the possible penalties for failing to follow the law. Below, you will find both a written breakdown and videos explaining these rules. If you have any questions, please contact School Resource Officer Sergeant Marc Plute at mplute@livermoreca.gov.
