Elementary School Student Expectations

Does a student have to be on camera?

Yes. All students must have their video camera ON and students must be in view. (There are a few exceptions to this rule. It must be in writing in a Special Education IEP or 504 plan).

Is Elementary Science Mandatory?

Science is mandatory. The student must attend during their Science time.

Is Intervention class, Music, or Library time mandatory?

Yes. They are mandatory

What time does my student need to be available for class?

Classes can be scheduled from 8:00am-3:00pm, just like before distance learning.

Monday-Friday Elementary “synchronous” classes are in the morning, but Science, Music, Intervention, Library and other classes might be in the afternoon. Please learn your child’s schedule.

My teacher gives students work  to do on their own. Do they have to do this

Distance learning assignments are mandatory. Since students are online half the school day, teachers give “asynchronous” work for the other half of the school day.

Is there etiquette for family members?

Family members often forget that the camera is on during school hours. Please remember to be fully clothed when a student is in class. In addition, loud noises and conversations in the house are also on display for the children of the class.  Remember, some classes are recorded.

How should a student spend break time?

Students should return from break time promptly. It is expected that you have gone to the bathroom, eaten a snack, and are ready for class with all of your materials when you return from a break.

What is an “excused” absence?

Parents and Guardians should call the school’s attendance line to excuse their student. The State says that an
“Excused absence” is illness, doctor’s appointment, court date, or funeral of a family member.

What happens when a student  has technology/ camera Issues?

If a student is having technology issues they need to call the office and make sure we can fix or replace your computer. If not, they run the risk of being counted unexcused from class.

Can a teacher count a student absent if they are logged in?

Yes. A teacher can drop a student off of the class or count a student as absent if:

  • A student is not in camera view (unless a documented tech issue with office)
  • Is unresponsive when asked questions and not in view
  • After the class ends students are still logged on and unresponsive/not in view. The teacher will assume they turned on the computer and walked away.

What do teachers recommend parents and students do everyday?

Read Schoology posts and email daily.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade should also check “See Saw” daily.

What does proper distance learning look like?

Proper learning means a student is settled, upright, at a desk/table, alert, focused on class, with required materials.  Headphones are recommended. Laying in bed is not a proper learning environment.

Can a student be held back in the same grade again next year?

Yes. If a student is not regularly attending classes, turning in work, or academically progressing there is a possibility of retaining the student. The teachers and administration will begin assessing these cases and having conversations with families.
