University of California's Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE)

March 23, 2022

This letter provides information about the 2022 administration of the University of California's Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE). Passing the AWPE is one method of satisfying UC's Entry Level Writing Requirement. This year, UC will administer the AWPE as an online exam on Saturday, May 21 to students who have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement by other means and have submitted their Statement of Intent to Register to one of these four campuses:

    • UC Berkeley
    • UCLA
    • UC Riverside
    • UC San Diego

Students selected to take the AWPE on May 21 will be notified by email in May. Students planning to enroll at UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Santa Barbara or UC Santa Cruz should not take the AWPE and instead will have campus-specific options for course placement and satisfaction of the Entry Level Writing Requirement.

Comprehensive information about the Entry Level Writing Requirement and the AWPE is available online at www.ucop.edu/elwr. The website details methods of satisfying the requirement besides passing the AWPE, such as by earning qualifying scores on the ACT, SAT, AP, and IB exams or by successfully completing a UC-transferable English composition course offered by a college or university. In addition, the Entry Level Writing Requirement website provides a sample AWPE, FAQs, and links to the five UC campuses that offer campus-specific options.

Annual results of the Entry Level Writing Requirement are available in the UC Information Center. Data can be viewed by school or county and are intended to provide useful feedback as educators work with students to improve academic performance. Please visit
