AMANDA GORMAN - American Poet (1998 - present)
Amanda S. C. Gorman is an American poet and activist. Her work focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, race, and marginalization, as well as the African diaspora. Gorman was the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate.
She was the youngest inaugural poet in American history when she wrote and recited her original poem, "The Hill We Climb."
She has a speech impediment - saying the letter "r" is particularly difficult for her. As a kid, Amanda started writing poetry to help her find her voice. Then, in high school, she began reciting her poetry out loud. This helped improve her speech. She also credits singing songs from the musical, "Hamilton" which helped her as well!

Today we celebrate Native American interpreter Sacagawea.
Famed American explorers Lewis and Clark would not have made it very far without Native American interpreter Sacagawea. Born in Idaho in 1788, Sacagawea was about 12 years old when she was captured by an enemy tribe and sold to a French Canadian trapper who made her his wife. Three years later, Lewis and Clark hired her husband to accompany them on their famous journey, and a pregnant Sacagawea was invited to come along as a Native American interpreter. She proved to be much more than an interpreter, however, and acted as more of a naturalist and “cultural ambassador” as the expedition traveled through previously uncharted lands. By the time the expedition reached the Oregon coast, Lewis and Clark thought so highly of Sacagawea that she was given an equal vote with the men on where to build the fort and which routes to take on the way back east.

Today we celebrate activist Helen Keller.
Most people know the story of Helen Keller’s childhood. The inspiring story of the little girl stricken blind and deaf by illness as a toddler, who learned to read and speak. Fewer people are familiar with Keller’s adult life, when she became an acclaimed writer and activist. After becoming the first deaf and blind person ever to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in college, Keller embarked on a life advocating for others. She was a suffragist, pacifist, and radical socialist who fought for the rights of people with disabilities. In 1920, she helped found the American Civil Liberties Union (the ACLU). She devoted much of her adult life to raising money for the American Foundation for the Blind. She traveled the world giving inspirational speeches, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964.

RACHEL CARSON - author, Silent Spring (1907 - 1964)
A student of nature, a born ecologist before that science was defined, and a writer who found the natural world gave her something to write about.
Perhaps the finest nature writer of the Twentieth Century, Rachel Carson is remembered more today as the woman who challenged the notion that humans could obtain mastery over nature by chemicals, bombs, and space travel than for her studies of ocean life. Her sensational book, Silent Spring, (1962) warned of dangers to all natural systems from the misuse of chemicals and pesticides. She is considered the writer who initiated the contemporary environmental movement.

She was then selected to be an astronaut and served as director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston from 2013 to 2018. She continues to speak at schools and conferences to inspire young girls to focus on their education because that was the key to her success.

Amy Beach--born Sept. 5, 1867. Because women composers were such a rarity, she grew up wanting to be a concert pianist even though she was quite a gifted composer. Her mother discouraged her dream, but her husband encouraged and supported her in her pursuit. Largely self-taught, she was the first woman to have her work played by a major American symphony orchestra when her Gaelic Suite was played by the Boston Symphony in 1896.
Because of naming conventions of the time, she was still known as Mrs H.H.A. Beach, and critics linked the strengths or weaknesses in her works to being a woman, rather than judging the works on their own merits. Her 1900 piano concerto in C-sharp minor is thought to reflect her battle for musical identity against her mother, her husband, and the orchestral community.
When her husband died in 1910 she went to Europe to reclaim her freedom and identity, and in 1912, going by the name Amy Beach, she started giving concerts again. Thereafter, she spent winters touring and summers at home in Massachusetts composing. In between composing and performing, Beach also supported the careers of other young composers.

Queen Liliʻuokalani (lee lee oo oh ka la knee)
-
Liliʻuokalani was the last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Upon taking the throne she wrote a new constitution that would restore veto power to the monarchy and enable economically disenfranchised Native Hawaiians and Asians to have voting rights and a voice in the political process. That constitution never became the law of the land as she was illegally overthrown by American and European businessman, supported by the U.S. military, who were threatened by these new governing views of the Queen.
-
Imprisoned in her own palace, where she was locked away to its second-floor for nearly a year, Liliʻuokalani wrote her memoirs and composed mele (songs) such as “The Queen’s Prayer” and “Aloha ʻOe,” regarded famously today as a lament for the loss of Hawaiʻi nation.
-
As a lone woman in the face this forceful removal from her rightful rule, she’s remembered for her resilience, belief in peaceful resistance and her attempts to re-empower the people of Hawaii over corporate interests.

Selena Quintanilla Pérez (Spanish pronunciation: [seˈlena kintaˈniʝa ˈpeɾes]; April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995), known mononymously as Selena, was an American Tejano singer. Called the "Queen of Tejano music", her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and Latin songs chart.[3] Media outlets called her the "Tejano Madonna" for her clothing choices.[a] She also ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.[8][9]

DOROTHEA DIX (1802 - 1887) - American Nurse
Dorothea Dix played an instrumental role in the founding or expansion of more than 30 hospitals for the treatment of the mentally ill. She was a leading figure in those national and international movements that challenged the idea that people with mental disturbances could not be cured or helped.
After the Battle of Gettysburg, Dix and her nurses helped care for approximately 5,000 Confederate soldiers that were left behind. She resigned from the Union Army in August of 1865 and was a well-respected nurse because of her dedication to caring for all soldiers.

Shout out to our Boy’s A Volleyball team, who lost the championship, but had a great season. I am especially proud of the sportsmanship they showed in the final games, even when some rough calls by the ref didn’t got their way- they showed a lot of character and made me proud. I also want to recognize our two team captains: Pamir and David, for being great leaders and examples of what it means to be a student athlete at East

Dolores Huerta:
Doing back-breaking work under the unforgiving sun, sleeping in rough shacks with dozens of men to a room, all for below-poverty-level wages; farm workers in the early Twentieth Century, most of whom were immigrants from Central America, had a hard, painful, unjust life. That is, until Dolores Huerta and others like her came along. In 1965, Huerta created the United Farm Workers, an organization that worked tirelessly to improve the working conditions for farm workers. By leading boycotts, picketing, protesting and lobbying, Huerta was instrumental in bringing about legislation that protects.

Leadership has been discussing how they are going to use the money the school raises from the cookie dough fundraiser. They want some suggestions on how we can make lunchtime better. Next week they will have a suggestion box out where students can give their ideas on how we can make lunch time more fun. The more money we raise the more we will have to use. For everything we sell the school gets a percentage of that money. For example, if everyone in the school sold two items we would make about $4000 to use, and if we sold more then we would make more. If you havent sold anything yet you have until next friday to try to get atleist two items sold. If you are not sure how to sell items there will be leadership students in the MPR all week that can help you figure it out. Dont forget to drop those cookie dough orders into the office once you have them.

Each year, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and is always 46 days before Easter Sunday. Lent is a 40-day season (not counting Sundays) marked by repentance, fasting, reflection, and ultimately celebration
-
The ashes of this holiday symbolize two main things: death and repentance. “Ashes are equivalent to dust, and human flesh is composed of dust or clay (Genesis 2:7), and when a human corpse decomposes, it returns to dust or ash.”
-
“When we come forward to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday, we are saying that we are sorry for our sins and that we want to use the season of Lent to correct our faults, purify our hearts, control our desires and grow in holiness so we will be prepared to celebrate Easter with great joy” (The CatholicSpirit.com).

Black Sculptor William Edmondson, son of Tennessee slaves, did not consider himself an artist when he began carving around 1932, after retiring from his job as a laborer. Inspired by a vision, he emphasized his divine calling. Edmondson carved gravestones, free-standing figurative sculpture, and garden ornaments, using discarded blocks of limestone and chisels fashioned from railroad spikes. Animals, biblical subjects, and secular figures like Eleanor Roosevelt and Nashville school teachers dominated his repertoire.

Care with group chats and threats in social media. Do not participate in group chats with lots of anonymous people, as there will often be inappropriate language, threats, racial comments, etc. You can get school consequences for things that you do in social media accounts outside of school and we will contact parents to discuss poor negative social media interactions. More importantly, criticizing people’s appearance, threatening them, making racial comments, etc. is just the wrong thing to do. You are better than that, East Avenue!

In recognition of Black History month, we are honoring the contributions of Black Americans. Today- Zora Neal Hurston, a famous Black female author. The most popular of her four novels is Their Eyes Were Watching God, published in 1937. She also wrote more than 50 short stories, plays, and essays. She was among the most influential authors during the Harlem Renaissance, a movement of the 1920s and 1930s, centered in Harlem, that celebrated black traditions, the black voice, and black ways of life. It instilled in African Americans across the country a new spirit of self-determination and pride and definitely something worth knowing about. It is more than worth a Google Search.

The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt.

Eight candles symbolize the number of days that the Temple lantern blazed; the ninth, the shamash, is a helper candle used to light the others. Families light one candle on the first day, two on the second (and so on) after sundown during the eight days of Hanukkah while reciting prayers and singing songs.

Stern reminder that academics are not a joke. Students are going to be heading out into a competitive world. In homework club yesterday, I sat with some students who have low grades and who were sitting in hw club wasting their time, and students who had some very low skills. No one else can make you try hard- it has to be you. No one will feel sorry for you if you reach adulthood without skills. They will just pass you by. If you aren’t learning something every day, you are falling behind.
