MATHCOUNTS® 2019 Information and Registration
Day: Every Wednesday (October 2, 2019 to April 2020) (except holidays)
Time: From 1:35 to 2:20 PM
Place: Multi-Purpose Room
The purpose of MATHCOUNTS® is to encourage interest and develop ability in mathematics among all middle school students. Each week students meet and work problems of varying degrees of difficulty. Volunteer coaches help the students to solve the problems by individually encouraging them to develop problem-solving methods.
Most of our coaches are current or retired scientists and engineers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory. A list of rules students that are expected to obey during MATHCOUNTS® sessions is on second page of this notice.
In January, students may compete with students in the other Livermore middle schools at a local MATHCOUNTS® competition in which all MATHCOUNTS® students are encouraged to participate. In February, a team of four plus possibly up to four other individuals will be chosen to compete in a regional competition with about 20 other Bay Area schools. Then the regional winners will compete in the state competition.
Support for the MATHCOUNTS® program is entirely on a volunteer basis from the parents and teachers. Parents who want to coach are welcome. If you would like to participate as volunteer, please contact the school office.
MATHCOUNTS® is one of the country’s largest and most successful education partnerships. Presidents B. Obama, G. W. Bush, W. Clinton, G. H. Bush and R. Reagan have all recognized MATHCOUNTS® in Oval Office ceremonies, and the program has received two White House citations as an outstanding initiative.
New students are always welcome at any session during the year. Interested students should complete the MathCounts Registration Form 2019 and bring it with them to the MathCounts meeting. We look forward to working with the CMS students.
