2024 Superintendent Search

  • On March 29, 2024, Superintendent Chris Van Schaack announced his planned retirement at the end of the 2023-24 school year, after more than 30 years of service to the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD).

    The LVJUSD Board of Education is in the process of conducting an executive search for the purpose of hiring our district's next superintendent. Leadership Associates, an executive search firm, was selected to advise the Board in this important process.

  • Superintendent Search Timeline (Printable Timeline)

    MARCH/APRIL 2024 - Preliminary Phase

    • March 22: District receives search firm proposals
    • April 17: Proposal presentations; Board selects firm

    APRIL 2024 - Community Engagement

    • April 22: Initial meeting with the Board; Board determines characteristics, skills, and qualities desired in new superintendent; publicly announces timeline and procedures (Open and closed sessions- approximately 3 hours total)
    • April 23 - May 4: Online survey dates
    • April 30 (7:00 p.m.): Community Input Forum (in-person) hosted by Leadership Associates; located in the LVJUSD District Office Boardroom at 685 E. Jack London Boulevard; open to the public.
    • April 30 & May 2: Consultants confer with staff and community designated by the Board to receive input

    APRIL/MAY 2024 - Advertisement and Recruitment

    • April/May: Consultants identify potential candidates; development and posting of recruitment materials and position description
    • April 29 & May 13: Advertising and active recruitment; ad appears in EdCal for two consecutive publications
    • May 18: Deadline for applications 

    MAY/JUNE 2024 - Interviews and Selection

    • May: Consultants complete comprehensive reference and background checks on applicants
    • May 28 (1:30 - 5:00 p.m.): Board confers with consultants, reviews all applications, and selects candidates to be interviewed (closed session- approximately 3 hours)
    • June 8 (and June 9th if needed): Board interviews candidates; selects finalist(s) - closed session, all-day meeting

    JUNE 2024 - Contract Approval

    • June: Board completes the validation process of the leading candidate and makes final determination
    • June 18: Board approves superintendent contract at a regularly scheduled Board meeting

    JULY 2024

    • July 1: New superintendent begins

    Survey

    The Board of Education values the input of educational partners and community members regarding the most important attributes, qualities, and experience that should be considered when selecting the next superintendent. We encourage parents/guardians, staff, students, and members of the Livermore community to provide their feedback through an anonymous, online survey. See below for a link to the survey in both English and Spanish. The survey will close on Saturday, May 4 at 11:59 p.m.

    In-Person Forum

    Leadership Associates will host a Community Input Forum on Tuesday, April 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the LVJUSD District Office Boardroom at 685 East Jack London Boulevard. This meeting is open to all community members who would like to share their input and thoughts in person.

    1. How does the search process work?
      The Board is working with Leadership Associates to conduct a rigorous, nationwide search. The Board will seek, receive, consider and review all input from the community, review all candidate applications, interview those candidates determined by the Board and select the new superintendent. 
    2. When will the new Superintendent be hired?
      The Board will approve and publish a timeline which will reflect these details. The timeline is available on this webpage. The dates indicated are subject to change as the search process continues.
    3. How and when do parents and other educational partners weigh-in?
      The Board will be soliciting input on the characteristics, experience, and skills desired in the next superintendent via an online survey and input conference sessions.
    4. When will the District share the collected input with the public?
      All information gathered will be presented to the Board and then compiled, summarized, and incorporated into the Superintendent's Position Profile / Description, which will be published here following Board review.
    5. Who will make the final selection?
      By law, the Board is solely responsible for hiring the new Superintendent. The Board will seek, receive, and consider all input from the community, review all applications, interview those candidates determined by the Board, and select the new superintendent.
    6. How can the public follow this process?
      Updates regarding the Superintendent search process will be posted here. The Board will also provide updates at its regularly scheduled board meetings and future press releases.
    7. Can we find out who is applying?
      All application materials, including the names of applicants and any other personally identifiable information, are confidential under law.
