    Dear 8th Grade Parents/Guardians,
              This school year is winding down and 8th grade promotion is ten school days away!  With that in mind, we have a few reminders for our families regarding the 8th grade end of the year activities. 
              All students will be released to go home at 12:25 p.m. on Thursday, June 6.  We will not be releasing 8th graders early. If you need to sign your child out before 12:25, please remember those students who are promoting will be rehearsing until approximately 11 a.m. It is important that all students who are participating in promotion be at the rehearsal. 
              Promoting students need to arrive in the gym no later than 5:30 p.m. on the night of promotion, June 6.  All students are expected to be dress code appropriate (no gum, hats, strapless, spaghetti straps, halter-top dresses, sagging pants, etc.). In addition, all students must wear the royal blue Promotion Ceremony Gown. This is an important event and we want to ensure that all students are dressed appropriately. If you have any questions about the dress code, please refer to page 4 of the student planner or come to the office to ask. 
              There will be no reserved seating, except for handicap seating, at the promotion ceremony.  The gates will remain locked on the day of promotion until 5:15 pm. If you or a family member has a special need, please call the office to prearrange an accommodation.  We ask that all families respect the handicap seating areas and are considerate of others. We have limited seating with the chairs available. We also ask that families do not bring noisemakers (as they can create huge distractions), balloons (which can obstruct the view), or animals to the ceremony. Thank you for your cooperation.

    Gown Distribution Day - Thursday, May 30
              Promotion gowns will be distributed immediately after school on Thursday, May 30, in the Multi-Purpose Room.
    Promotion Celebration Dance - Friday, May 31, 7:00-9:30 p.m.
               Eighth grade students attending the dance must present their current CMS photo ID card at the door for admittance. Students who do not adhere to the District dress code will not be permitted to enter the dance.
    * Please note students must be passing all of their classes for the 3rd trimester as of Wednesday, May 29, in order to attend the dance.
    Great America Trip - Monday, June 3
              Those students who are attending the Great America trip should report to their first period class at the usual time.  Buses will return to CMS at approximately 5 p.m. for parent pick-up. 
              Those students not attending the Great America Field Trip will be given an alternate schedule for the day.
    Promotion Ceremony - Thursday, June 6, 6:00-7:30 p.m.
              Gates will open at 5: 15 p.m.  Promoting students should arrive at the Gym by 5:30 p.m. dressed in their gowns.  Students are not allowed to carry flowers or balloons during promotion. Adult presence is required to reserve seating for up to five. Staff members will monitor reserve seating to ensure adult presence.
    ** Handicap seating is available. Please call the office in advance to insure we have an adequate number of seats. Along with the handicap seating, one companion seat will be made available.
    *** In order to attend this activity, students must have passing grades in all of their classes for the third trimester.
              Following the conclusion of the ceremony, students with gowns on loan from CMS are to return the borrowed gowns in the "Gown Return Bin" located at each of the main exit gates as they leave campus.

    Dear 8th Grade Parents,
              It is never too early to provide information about 8th grade activities.  With this in mind, we need to inform you of specific information about the Great America trip and other promotion activities.  It is our intent to continue to inform families with the hope of avoiding any last minute confusion.
              Please save this letter to refer to throughout the upcoming months.
    Panoramic Picture
    March 11      Panoramic picture order forms will be distributed to students in Core class.
    March 14      Panoramic picture will be taken in the afternoon. The price for the picture (not framed) is $22. The price for the framed picture is $39.
    Promotion Gown
    March 18      Promotion ceremony gown form due.
    8th Grade Great America Field Trip
    April 19        Great America permission slip, field trip emergency form, and money due.
                        ($75 for ticket and transportation or $44 for transportation only for students with a season pass).
    Great America Field Trip Date
    June 3          Students will report to school at their regular time and go to their first period class to wait for instructions to board the buses.
    Promotion Dance and Ceremony Dates
    May 31         Promotion Dance in the Multi-Purpose Room from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.  
    June 6          Promotion Ceremony at 6 p.m. in the CMS Courtyard.

    8th Grade Panoramic Picture
              The 8th grade panoramic picture will be taken on Thursday, March 14, 2019. Order forms will be distributed on March 11 and must be returned with the exact amount (either $22 or $39) on the day of the photo if you wish to purchase a picture. The office cannot make change.
    8th Grade Promotion Gown Form
              The promotion ceremony will be held in the outside courtyard area on Thursday, June 6, 2019, at 6 p.m. In an effort to enhance the promotion ceremony and limit clothing cost for families, all promoting 8th grade students at Christensen Middle School will wear royal blue promotion gowns. Students will borrow a gown for the event and return it following the ceremony. Students may wear a gown from a previous year if they have access to one. The attached gown form is due Monday, March 18, 2019. In order to attend this activity, students must have passing grades in all of their classes for the third trimester.
    Great America Trip Paperwork
              The Great America trip is scheduled for Monday, June 3, 2019. Students will report to school at the regular time, go to their first period class and be called to board the bus at approximately 8:45 a.m. All students attending the trip must ride the bus to Great America. They will return at approximately 5 p.m. the same day.  Please be advised that if any student is caught by park security breaking any rules/regulations, he/she will be detained by park security and parents will be responsible for their child's transportation home from the park.
              For a limited time (March 20 through April 19), the 8th Grade Field Trip items (park entry and transportation or transportation only) will be active at our online RevTrak web store for families wishing to charge their donation. Families may also remit money orders, cash, or checks with the attached Great America permission slip and field trip emergency form to the office.  Checks and money orders should be made payable to "C.M.S." Students with season passes are free to use them but must notify the office by April 19. If a pass is being used, remit only the cost of the round-trip bus fare. No refunds will be given for passes purchased at a later date. Field trip forms must be turned into the school office with either a copy of the online payment receipt, cash, check or money order by April 19.
              Any student who has one or more F's at the end of the 2nd trimester will not attend the trip. Any student who does not attend the trip is expected to attend school on the day of the trip.
    8th Grade Promotion Dance
              The promotion dance will be held on Friday, May 31, 2019, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. In order to provide an opportunity for family and friends to celebrate together, all of the Livermore middle schools will be hosting their celebration the Friday before the June 6 ceremony. To participate in this activity, students must have passing grades in all of their classes by Wednesday, May 29, 2019. 
              Please be on the lookout for more information regarding this event as there is a parent committee dedicated to coordinating the details. In order for your child to have a memorable night and fantastic experience, we need your input when planning this event. Parent volunteers are crucial to this event's success. This celebration is hosted entirely by 8th grade parent volunteers.  If you are interested in assisting the 8th grade promotion parent team or have contacts that could supply donations, please contact the CMS PTA.

    Dear Parents/Guardians:

    Eighth grade activities are just around the corner.  We are looking forward to a celebration of the culmination of three years of hard work on the part of your children.  Hopefully, the information included in this letter will assist you in your planning. 

    • All 8th grade students will be photographed in the 2018-2019 8th grade panoramic picture on March 14. 
    • This year the Promotion Dance will take place in the Multi-Purpose Room on Friday, May 31, 2019, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m.  In order to participate in this activity, students must have passing grades in all of their classes by Wednesday, May 29, 2019.

    Please remember before you purchase clothes for the promotion dance, this event is NOT a formal affair and the middle school dress code applies. Long formals, halter/spaghetti straps/strapless dresses, dresses with low necklines, etc. are appropriate for formal high school dances. However, they are NOT permitted at the middle school promotion dance or promotion ceremony.  We want to ensure that all students dress appropriately for eighth grade promotion activities.

    • This year the eighth grade trip to Great America will take place on Monday, June 3, 2019.  In order to take part in this activity, students must have passing grades in all classes on their report card at the end of the second trimester, March 7, 2019. Students must continue to maintain passing grades during the third trimester to attend. If students choose not to participate, they will be given an alternate schedule for the day.
    • The promotion ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 6, 2019.  In order to participate in this activity, students must have passing grades in all of their classes for the third trimester. We encourage our eighth graders to see this event as one for which they “dress for success.” Jeans, flip flops, and hats are not appropriate for this event and are not permitted at the ceremony.  Note that it is possible for students not to have the grades for the Great America trip but still be able to participate in the other two promotion activities.
    • An eighth grade student may advance to high school with one failing grade on his or her report card at the end of the third trimester. However, the student may not take part in the promotion ceremony or dance.  According to District policy, a student with two or more failing grades at the end of the third trimester must attend and pass summer school classes before advancing to high school.  A student with three failing grades may be retained.  Final decisions regarding students’ advancement to high school will be made by the administration in August.

    Panoramic Picture
    March 11    Panoramic picture order forms will be distributed to students in Core class. The school will receive a copy of the photo and will display it in the school library.  If you would like to purchase a copy for your student, the cost for the panoramic picture will be $22 and the framed panoramic picture will be $40. The Lifetouch photographer will be collecting the orders when the photograph is taken on March 14.

    March 14    Panoramic picture will be taken in the afternoon.  All 8th grade students will be included in the photograph. Students should be dressed appropriately as the district dress code will be enforced.

    Week of February 25:  Additional information packets will be sent home with permission slips and further details.

    In May, we will compile a list of students who are at-risk of failing the third trimester and in danger of not participating in both the Promotion Dance (May 31) and the CMS Promotion Ceremony (June 6).

    We hope all of our 8th grade students will want to participate in the 8th grade events.  If there is anything preventing your student’s participation in any of the upcoming events, please feel free to contact Mrs. Avilla.
