Mr. Jeff Taves
I love to teach reading and composition skills to my LHS English students. I know I love what I do, because the clock always seems to move too fast as we discuss the lives of the various characters we meet in our readings. One area of discussion involves conflict: why do people have conflicts? why do some people choose to escalate conflicts? why do some have a natural ability to de-escalate? Of course, without a conflict, there is no story. I look forward to such discussions within our longer English 9 stories, like Homer's epic poem the Odyssey, Shakespeare's tragic play Romeo and Juliet, Steinbeck's Great Depression-era novel Of Mice and Men, and various shorts, such as Amy Tan's "Rules of the Game," James Hurst's "The Scarlet Ibis," Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado," and more. Every new school year, these stories continue to reveal so much about our world to myself and my students. When not teaching, I love gardening, cooking, playing music, painting large canvases, and walking my three doggies, Charlie, Elvis, and Doodle.
