Parcel Tax FAQs

Our schools rely on locally-controlled funding to retain quality teachers and core academic programs. LVJUSD’s first parcel tax was approved by voters in 2004 and renewed by local voters in 2008, 2014 and 2022. This parcel tax (Measure A) provides local funding for LVJUSD schools that cannot be taken away by the State or other school districts. Measure A supports many of our schools’ enrichment programs, including:

• Elementary science and TK-12 technology specialists
• Attract and retain highly qualified teachers
• Maintain academic achievement in math, science, reading, writing, engineering and technology
• Keep technology and instructional materials up-to-date
• Maintain small class sizes
• Keep schools well maintained
• Purchase instructional equipment, materials and supplies

A parcel tax is a form of property tax that is unique to California. The parcel tax is defined as “a non-ad valorem tax imposed as an incident of property ownership”. This means that the tax is a fixed amount not based on the value of the property.

Measure A is a $138 tax on each parcel of taxable real property.

Strong schools attract families and enhance local property values.

The parcel tax benefits our local public school students. The money is used to provide supplemental financial support to the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District.

Any unit of real property in the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District which receives a separate tax bill for ad valorem property taxes which is otherwise not exempt.

• As part of the Measure A ballot measure, an independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee was established to ensure that monies raised by the parcel tax are spent wisely and only for the purposes named in the measure.
• The measure specifies that all money raised by Measure A would continue to be controlled locally and only go to LVJUSD schools.
• No funds can be taken away by the State of California.

Measure A was voted on and implemented in 2022 and will expire in 2029.

• Measure A provides exemptions for seniors over the age of 65 and for those receiving Supplemental Security Income for a disability.
